Lost in woods at night – probably can't see North Star. The moon rises in the east and sets in the west, just like the sun, so if you can stay in one place for 10 minutes and the moon is visible, then you can tell which way it is moving compared to your view past a tree. That way is west. This works best if the moon isn't too high in the sky.
Other tip, that helped me once - just keep going downhill. You will come to a stream. Follow it either upstream or down and you will be sure not to be going in circles.
